The bangs-or-no-bangs question has gotten complicated with all the conflicting opinions flying around. As someone who has helped hundreds of clients make this exact decision in the salon chair, I learned everything there is to know about whether bangs are right for you. Today, I will share it all with you.
This is the question I get at least once a day. And honestly? The answer is usually pretty clear once we look at a few things together.
Get Bangs If…
Your forehead is larger and you want to balance your proportions. Bangs provide instant coverage and change the perceived dimensions of your face. I’ve watched clients’ eyes light up the moment those first pieces fall across their forehead. The transformation is real.
You’re actually willing to maintain them. Bangs need trimming every two to three weeks. Not “when you get around to it.” Every two to three weeks. Skip that and you enter the awkward in-between phase where they’re in your eyes and driving you crazy.
Your hair is straight or slightly wavy. These textures play nice with bangs. They lie flat, sweep where you want them, and generally cooperate. Curly bangs exist and can look amazing, but they demand more daily work to keep from going rogue.
Skip Bangs If…
You’ve got a cowlick at your hairline. Probably should have led with this section, honestly. A cowlick will fight your bangs every single morning and the cowlick will win. Every. Time. I’ve seen clients insist on bangs despite the cowlick, and they’re back within a month asking me to grow them out.
You genuinely hate styling your hair. Bangs need attention every morning. Sleep on them wrong and you wake up to chaos. If your current routine is “roll out of bed and go,” bangs will be a daily frustration.
You sweat a lot or live in a humid climate. Forehead sweat plus bangs equals greasy, stringy mess by lunchtime. That’s what makes bangs tricky for active women — they look gorgeous in the morning and terrible after a gym session.
The Smart Middle Ground
Not sure? Try side-swept bangs first. They’re way more forgiving than blunt bangs, way easier to grow out if you hate them, and they give you a taste of bang life without the full commitment. Think of it as a trial period for your forehead. If you love the side-swept version, you can always go heavier later.
